Integrated solutions provider Xchanging Malaysia has won the Global AirRail 'Best Payment Solution' 2014 award for its work for Malaysia's Express Rail Link, which runs the transit services KLIA Ekspres and KLIA Transit.

Xchanging Malaysia chief executive officer Murali Nadarajah
said the company's "pioneering automatic fare collection system for the KLIA Ekspres and KLIA Transit services [transit services at Kuala Lumpur International Airport] operated by Express Rail."

Nadarajah said the automatic fare collection (AFC) system "is the first global cloud-based travel and ticketing exchange, and services over 7 million passengers per annum. The system offers an end-to-end multi-channel avenue and validation solution that manages ticketing operations across six stations from the capital's transport hub to the international airports."

He said that replacing the existing magnetic stripe ticket with a QR barcode ticket allowed passengers to enjoy a seamless and faster ticketing service by accessing one channel to book their complete itinerary.

"Upon payment, passengers are provided with a universal ticket that is used throughout their journey. Other forms of electronic cards are VISA PayWave and Touch 'n Go which can be used by passengers across all stations," said Nadarajah.

The key objective of the AFC system was to replace existing systems across all stations to an integrated solution that was economical, easy to maintain, scalable and designed to allow new stations to be added at any point with minimal effort, he said.

 Cloud-based vision

"It is truly exciting to win a Global AirRail [GARA] award, and we are honoured to be recognised in the best payment solution category for our services with Express Rail Link," added Nadarajah.

"Xchanging's vision was to implement a cloud-based digital transportation experience for seamless route planning and payment options that would be a game changer for the industry," he said. "We are also pleased that with the success of our system, it has opened up new avenues of growth for Express Rail Link within the AFC industry in Malaysia."

Express Rail Link chief executive officer, Noormah Mohd Noor, said,  "We extend our congratulations to Xchanging in winning the GARA Award. Their advanced AFC system provided us with an integrated technology solution that not only achieved increased cost savings at every service touch-point, but also connected millions of passengers for an improved travel experience."
